Please join me this Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles from two to five p.m. for the opening reception of “Sacred Words, Sacred Texts” – an exhibition in collaboration with American Jewish University,
USC Hillel and Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion/LA.

It's a group show featuring artists from around the world, and I am pleased to have 12 papercuts included, many on loan from local collectors.

The reception starts at 2 pm at Hebrew Union College (3077 University Avenue, Los Angeles – 213 749 3424) and at some point wanders down to the USC site for dessert.

"Luachot HaBrit" papercut donated to support local synagogue luncheon

I've donated an original papercut titled "Luachot HaBrit" in support of the Temple Ahavat Shalom Early Childhood Education Center Luncheon. That means you can bid on it and walk away with some of my art! And yes, it's already framed. What an opportunity!

The piece is a representation of the Tablets of the Law -- the Ten Commandments, that is -- and it comprises the first ten letters of the Hebrew alphabet (the "aleph bet") set against a warm background of art papers. And the frame? A warm, natural wood.

Seven to Seventy

Completed a new piece tentatively titled "Seven to Seventy" (click the pix to see it larger). It's a revelation piece, with a lot of midrash in it. Look for seven bolts of lightning, Captain Marvel, pieces from a chumash index, watercolor, and more. Here are some close-up shots (click make them larger):

Luachot haBrit:Sapphire Tablets

Midrash tells us that the Luachot haBrit -- the tablets of the covenant, AKA the Ten Commandments -- were carved out of sapphire. My latest paper midrash papercut is based on this midrash, and I've used the "Star Sapphire" character from Green Lantern (and most recently seen in the "Blackest Night" series) to represent the sapphire. Her suit is of the pink sapphire persuasion, but she has a blue star sapphire in her helmet (you can see a few of them scattered throughout). I've got new AND old panels in here, so you comics buffs will have a lot of fun parsing all of the subtexts when you see it in person.

And All the People Saw the Voices(Paper Midrash)

This is a piece I've titled, "And All the People Saw the Voices," after the verse in Exodus 20:18 concerning the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. The Hebrew word for "voices" is also the word for "lightning" -- hence the symbolism here, also representing the thunder and lightning surrounding Mount Sinai. The rabbis teach that God's voice split into seven voices, which split into seventy languages -- allowing all people across the world to understand.
